Insulation and solar installations – your questions answered

25% of heat escapes through your loft. Luckily it is very easy to prevent this heat loss by cross laying the appropriate insulation material.

What is loft insulation?

Usually fibreglass material in 400mm wide rolls and range from 100mm thick to 250m thick. We install three types of insulation: glass fibre, white bead and silver bead, all offfering high performance insulating properties.

How is loft insulation installed?

The fibre rolls are laid parallel to each other, 100mm thick rolls laid between the joists, on the floor of your loft and 170mm rolls crossed laid over the top of your joists, in the opposite direction.

How long does it take?

The time to lay loft insulation depends on the property size and other factors, such as obstacles.

Is my house suitable?

Before the installation, Absolute Insulation would have sent a trained surveyor to assess your property to confirm the suitability and requirements for loft insulation.

Do I have anything to do before the installation?

The installer will require full access to your loft area and as such will require that all personal items and loose boards are removed the loft space.

Are all types of insulation the same?

There are several types of insulation:

  • Mineral fibre/fibreglass matting (yellow wool material)
  • Loose fill insulation (blown in insulation)
  • Sheep wool (expensive alternative)

Are the technicians trained?

Our trainee surveyors conduct initial training with us, followed by INSTA/Snug Network approved training, which certifies them to NVQ Level 3 Energy Efficiency Advisors. Our INSTA approved technician's are trained and certified by the British Board of Agrement (BBA).

Will my house be warmer?

25% of heat loss from the average home is due to insufficient or inadequate loft insulation. This can be rectified by having your current insulation replaced or topped up as required.

How long will the insulation last?

For the life of the building – the British Board of Agrement say so.

I am considering switching to solar power, how much can I save?

A solar hot water heating system can provide your hot water for free and PV solar systems create electricity for use in the home. Even in today’s market the payback period is between 8-12 years, but with energy prices expected to continue rising, this timescale will reduce. Of course it is also a ‘green’ and ethical energy source, helping you reduce your carbon footprint.

Can I apply for a grant whatever my circumstances?

In order to benefit from the government grant scheme you must fulfil these criteria:

-You must live at the property or be receiving a utility bill

-You must own your home or rent from a private landlord (with landlord's permission)

-The property must be a private, domestic UK dwelling

-The insulation must not be a new build project

-Insulation must be fitted by approved installers

-Lofts must have under 4 inches of existing insulation

If I am concerned after the installation, what should I do?
